UPDATE: As of June 5, all pathways are open and animals will be back on exhibit if they were taken off during water main work.
To ensure reliable water service, Potter Park Zoo has undertaken a comprehensive water main improvement project. The initiative involves updating infrastructure to support animal care and facility operations.
Starting Tuesday, May 27, 2025, portions of the pathways will be closed to visitors to allow crews to gain access to our water main throughout the zoo.
As you wander through the zoo, you’ll notice some barricades along the path. Please refrain from bypassing these safety measures and follow detour signs. This not only helps maintain your safety but also allows crews to work efficiently and safely.
This investment reflects Potter Park Zoo’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, safety, and operational excellence, ensuring a dependable water supply for decades to come.

Sensory Challenges During Construction
We want to keep you informed and provide you with a glimpse of what to expect. As we work on our water main improvement project, we understand that certain sensory challenges may arise.
1. Smells: With the work being done through the grounds, there may be some temporary smells associated with the construction process.
2. Noise: Please be aware that the presence of heavy machinery might generate loud noises throughout the zoo during the construction period.
*Sensory Bags and headphones are available to check out at the admissions gate. We also have quiet areas throughout the zoo, which can be found here.
