Give Your Holiday Lights a Second Life at Potter Park Zoo

As homes across mid-Michigan sparkle with festive colors this season, many families will find themselves with strands of lights that are burnt out, broken, or ready to retire. Instead of tossing them in the trash, the community now has a more sustainable option that also supports a favorite local tradition.

Potter Park Zoo is excited to announce that we are accepting old, unwanted, or non-working holiday lights for recycling now through January 2026. Community members can drop off lights for free at the admissions gate (Discovery Center main doors) during regular zoo hours and during the Wonderland of Lights event, making it easy to give these decorations a second life.

When you recycle your holiday lights at Potter Park Zoo, the lights are carefully collected and sent to a specialized recycling facility where the materials are separated and repurposed. Copper wiring, plastic casing, and glass bulbs are recovered and reused to create new products instead of ending up in landfills. This process reduces waste, conserves natural resources, and prevents harmful materials from polluting the environment. By participating in the recycling program, you are not only keeping old lights out of the trash, but you are also supporting a more sustainable approach to handling electrical waste and promoting environmental stewardship in our community.

Wonderland of Lights at Potter Park Zoo

This year marks the 33rd annual Wonderland of Lights, a Lansing holiday favorite that continues to grow thanks to community support. The zoo transforms each winter into a glowing, family-friendly celebration filled with festive displays, illuminated pathways, and plenty of holiday magic. The event runs Thursday through Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. through December 23.

By recycling your holiday lights at Potter Park Zoo, you are doing more than responsibly disposing of seasonal décor. All proceeds from the recycled materials will help fund next year’s Wonderland of Lights, directly supporting the continuation and enhancement of one of Lansing’s favorite winter traditions. It is a simple act with a meaningful impact. You help reduce landfill waste, contribute to sustainability efforts, and ensure Wonderland of Lights shines even brighter for years to come.

This season, let your holiday spirit support something lasting. Recycle your lights at Potter Park Zoo and be part of keeping the wonder glowing for all.
