Potter Park Zoo allows one day job shadowing opportunities with zookeeping staff to allow participants to gain a better understanding of zoo careers. This program is open to students 13 years and older and is scheduled as time is available. Please allow at least two weeks for processing and scheduling of job shadow experiences. Space is limited in this program and slots are filled on a first come, first serve basis for those submitting completed applications. Job Shadow Applicant Requirements:
- Candidates must be a minimum of 13 years of age and currently enrolled in high school or college to participate in the Job Shadow Program.

Students in grades 9 – 12 will be scheduled for a 4-hour job shadow. The fee is $25*. Students in college will have the option of an 8-hour job shadow and the fee is $50 (*Scholarships are available to offset this cost)

The shadow must adhere to program rules and policies, be responsible, and exhibit good judgment and common sense.

Written permission from the shadow’s parent/guardian is required before students can participate in the Job Shadow experience.

Shadows must provide proof of a negative Tuberculosis test within the year prior to the scheduled shadow date.
- Potential job shadows should rate their order of preference between areas 60 (Hoofstock such as rhino and farmyard animals), 70 (Carnivore/Primate such as otter and spider monkey), and 80 (Birds/Herps/Education animals such as eagle, snakes, and ambassador animals). They are not guaranteed their first choice based on the schedule.
