Docents – Volunteer Educators

Do you love working with people and animals? Are you passionate about wildlife conservation? Become a Potter Park Zoo Docent and join over a hundred others with the same appreciation for wildlife and desire to make a difference.

What does a Docent do?

Zoo docents are the friendly, fun-loving and knowledgeable volunteer men and women who conduct the various educational programs at the zoo and in the community.

Some Other Benefits

As a docent, you’ll receive a discount in the AniMall Gift Shop and a free family membership to the Potter Park Zoo after one year of service. But the main benefit is being able to participate in one of the best wildlife education programs in the country by helping people of all ages learn and understand the importance of preserving our wildlife environment.

How do I Become a Docent?

To become a docent you must be 18 years of age or older, successfully complete the docent training course, have good communication skills and the ability to volunteer a minimum of 50 hours per year for at least 2 years. All qualified applicants will be asked to interview with Education Department staff.

There is also a $35 initial registration fee for all candidates who are accepted into the docent training program, and a materials fee due upon completion of the course.
