Pennsylvania Avenue Construction Updates
The City of Lansing has started a major reconstruction project on Pennsylvania Avenue. This work is expected to continue through mid-summer and includes significant infrastructure improvements between the river, Mt. Hope Avenue, and near Aurelius Road. While this project will ultimately improve the roadway for our community, it will temporarily change how guests access Potter Park Zoo.
What to Expect
During construction:
- Pennsylvania Avenue south of the zoo will be closed in phases
- Zoo traffic from the south will be detoured
- Guests will need to enter the zoo from the north
The City of Lansing has signage to help direct traffic safely and efficiently to the zoo entrance throughout the closure.
How to Get Here
To ensure a smooth arrival:
- Plan to approach the zoo from the north
- Follow posted detour and wayfinding signs
- Allow a few extra minutes for travel time
Due to underclearance restrictions at Big Penny, the railroad bridge north of the zoo entrance, some large vehicles cannot enter from that direction. Those deliveries and service vehicles will be coordinated separately and allowed limited access through the work zone when necessary.
Traffic Scenarios
Construction will occur in phases. Access routes may vary depending on whether:
- The Mt. Hope / Pennsylvania intersection is closed : View Map Here
- The Mt. Hope / Pennsylvania intersection is open: View Map Here
We Appreciate Your Patience
We are working closely with the City of Lansing and project contractors to minimize disruption and maintain safe, clear access to the zoo throughout construction.
Thank you for your flexibility as these important infrastructure improvements take place. We look forward to welcoming you this spring and summer.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact the zoo directly at (517) 483-4222.
