SUMMARY:5th Annual Bowling for Rhinos
DESCRIPTION:The American Association of Zoo Keepers\, Inc. (AAZK) is proud to announce the 28th year of Bowling for Rhinos and Potter Park Zoo’s 5th event. Since 1990\, zoo keepers from the United States and Canada have donated their time and skills to run this event allowing every penny raised to go to help endangered species such as rhinos\, cheetahs\, elephants\, and tigers. Bowling for Rhinos is one of the only fundraisers that gives 100% of all funds raised nationally directly to animal conservation. \nThe Potter Park Zoo AAZK Chapter will be holding their fifth annual event on Friday\, August 3rd from 6 to 9 PM at City Limits East in East Lansing\, MI.  \nDid you know there are only 35 Javan rhinos left in the wild? Or in 2017 there were 1\,028 rhinos poached in South Africa alone? The threat of extinction is alarming as these animals are disappearing due to intense poaching. The five rhino species are “Umbrella” species. Therefore\, by saving the rhinos’ habitats\, we are saving whole ecosystems that are home to hundreds of species of mammals\, birds\, insects\, reptiles\, and plants. This Bowling for Rhinos event helps protect 1.5 million acres of land in Kenya and 1.4 million acres in Indonesia. \nThe Bowling for Rhinos event is a fun way to help a very serious cause. Participants enjoy three full hours of bowling\, food\, and entertainment in exchange for donations. To maximize the amount we raise and send to conservation efforts\, we need your help. \n  \nRegister here: http://bit.ly/PPZB4Rhinos

DESCRIPTION:Potter Park Zoo is pleased to announce that our program for autistic learners and their families has been expanded to include children with other special needs. FALCONERS is designed to allow autistic or other special needs learners and their whole family to have an enriching educational experience in a safe and welcoming environment. There will be one event per month throughout 2018. \nIn February\, we are partnering with our friends at Abrams Planetarium on the campus of MSU for a special “Star Safari” program.  This will be a different format from our other events as we will have scheduled activities rather than drop-in stations.  Join us as we explore the stars and discover that many of the constellations we see are pictures of animals!  We’ll learn a little bit about the mythology behind the constellations\, and some facts about the animals they represent.  The sensory friendly theater presentation will begin shortly after 10:00 and we will have live animals and crafts in the lobby afterwards.   Light snacks (and coffee for adults!) will be provided after the theater portion of the program. \nPLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT TAKES PLACE AT ABRAMS PLANETARIUM ON THE CAMPUS OF MSU. \nThere is a small charge of $1.50 per person for this off-site event. \nTo register for the Saturday February 24 event at Abrams Planetarium\, please click here.
