Bowling for Rhinos is a project of the American Association of Zoo Keepers Inc. (AAZK) and is celebrating it’s 27th year. Since 1990, zoo keepers from the United States and Canada have donated their time and skills to run this event so that every penny raised can help endangered species such as rhinos, cheetahs, elephants and tigers. More than 60 AAZK chapters participate raising between $200,000 and $300,000 annually. Bowling for Rhino funds support Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, Ujung Kulon National Park in Indonesia, and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park and Way Kambas in Sumatra. These sanctuaries work not only to save rhinos, but these entire ecosystems!

#ZooYouKnow – There are only 35 Javan rhinos left in the wild and in 2012 618 rhinos were poached in South Africa alone. The threat of extinction is alarming, as these animals are still disappearing due to intense poaching. The five rhino species are the umbrello species. Therefore, by saving rhino habitat, we are saving entire ecosystems that include hundreds of species of mammals, birds, insects, reptiles and plants. This event helps protect 1.5 million acres of land in Kenya and 1.4 million acres in Indonesia.
