Lansing, MI, – Potter Park Zoo is thrilled to announce the arrival of two new residents – Canadian lynx brothers Ragnar and Rollo, both 4-years-old. Hailing from the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium, these magnificent felines are settling into their new habitat at Potter Park Zoo and are already captivating visitors with their grace and beauty.
“We are excited for our community to have the opportunity to learn about this new species,” said Zoo Director, Cynthia Wagner. “Zoo staff have enjoyed getting to know this pair and did a tremendous job preparing for their arrival.”
The Canadian lynx, known scientifically as Lynx canadensis, is a species native to the northern regions of North America. Typically found in boreal forests with dense undergrowth, these elusive cats are renowned for their striking appearance and unique hunting behaviors.
Despite their adaptability and resilience, Canadian lynx face numerous conservation challenges. Aggressive logging, roadbuilding, and habitat fragmentation have significantly impacted their natural habitat, posing threats to their survival. Disturbances to the natural fire cycle of lodgepole pines have led to declines in snowshoe hare populations, a prey species of the lynx, and have further impacted their population.
