Lake Tanganyika

This African great lake is estimated to be second or third in volume, and second deepest in the world (after Lake Baikal).  Lake Tanganyika is divided between four countries: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Zambia.  The water from the lake flows into the Congo River system, and eventually into the Atlantic Ocean.  As you enter this eco-region of the Zoo, you will notice immediate similarities and distinct differences between this African savanna and the Michigan Plains.  You’ll see familiar African animals here; the lion, rhino, mandrill, and okapi; who have all adapted to the higher elevation and cooler climate of the Tanganyika region.Lions in the Savannah
